By Kari Eriksson When it comes to the term LDS Dating many outsiders may first wonder what is all about. LDS dating is an abbreviation for Latter Day Saint Dating. For those of you that are not familiar with the history of this movement, here is a look at some of that history. LDS dating stems from the LDS movement which is a movement within Christian Restorationism origination from the earlier parts of the 19th century. The founder is said to have been Joseph Smith Jr who was brought up in the state of New York, probably in a region where many LDS singles are looking for their partner today through different dating services. Called The Second Great Awakening this rise of a new belief system also included big camp meeting in 1801 at Cane Ridge in Kentucky. At this meeting it is said that the participants exhibited for example different heavenly visions. The origin of all this that has lead to the large interest in LDS dating today happened on a part of the east coast of the United States called the Burned-Over District due to that so many Christian revivals were happening here at that time. A person interested in LDS dating probably has some Latter Day Saint background, but probably as with most different religions the person might be more or less adhered to the original beliefs of this church. They are said to have included the belief in the need to restore the true church of Jesus Christ. The early Latter Day Saints are also said to have believed that directy authority from God was necessary for such a restoration to happen properly. From its origins it spread to many different places, many where again we find a lot of LDS dating go on these days with most likely mainly young people looking for their mate who they wish to have the same core beliefs as themselves. Examples are Ohio, Missouri and Illionois. The orginasations then continued to grow and at times divide into different branches with similar beliefs. Today the largest domination is said to have 12 million members worldwide and probably this is part why LDS dating is a much sought after term online. So, when you head for your date with a man or woman who adhers to the beliefs of the Latter Day Saint movement you might now know some more about the backdrop of you LDS dating experience. As with any relationship, here also it would be of great help for your possible future life together to discover each others core values whatever they may be. Kari Eriksson is an infopreneur and came across the popularity of LDS dating some time back. He decided to learn more on this topic and is now gathering his learnings at http://www.lds-dating-online.com where you can find articles, links and other useful resources. Losing Pregnancy Weight
By Michael Bens Losing weight after pregnancy presents a special type of problem. At no other time in a womans life is she likely to gain as much weight in as short a period. And after having a baby, especially your first baby, life changes drastically. You might find it hard to make time to exercise. If youre nursing, you cant restrict calories. It seems as though many of the usual avenues to losing weight have been cut off. Though experts recommend that a woman gain no more than about 27 pounds during pregnancy, for some of us, thats easier said than done. Some women report that they gained weight during pregnancy regardless of how carefully they controlled their eating, even if they made a point of exercising. Some pregnancies just seem to demand weight gain interestingly, this seems to be particularly true of women who are naturally thinner than average to begin with. For a naturally skinny woman to gain what might seem to be a huge amount of weight sometimes up to sixty or even seventy pounds during pregnancy seems to be a rather common phenomenon. Pregnancy seems to change the way that food is metabolized and fat is stored. The amount of weight you gain during pregnancy may even be genetic. Of course, pregnancy food cravings also have something to do with it! Weve all heard of some of the bizarre cravings that pregnant women can get, but in fact, most crave the nutrients they need the most. Its not uncommon for a woman who is normally a vegetarian to have strong cravings for meat while she is pregnant, for instance. These are cravings you can and should give in to, because your body is telling you what it needs. Some women also find that they need to eat during the first trimester, because it keeps morning sickness at bay. Morning sickness is actually a bit of a misnomer, as it can happen at any time of day or night. It tends to happen the most when your stomach is empty and your blood sugar is low. Some women pack on the pounds during these first few months of pregnancy just to keep from feeling sick all the time. So, for one reason or another, many women find that its very difficult or impossible to control their weight gain during pregnancy. Thats not to say that you shouldnt try, of course, but if you know that youre eating healthy foods and the weight is coming on regardless, let it. Youll do more harm than good by trying to diet during pregnancy. As long as you arent binging or eating unhealthy foods, rest assured that your body has its own wisdom and you are gaining weight because you need to. Though only about ten or fifteen pounds are lost during delivery, there are plenty of opportunities to lose weight after the baby is born. For one thing, if you give it a month or so, you might find that most of the weight disappears on its own during nursing. In fact, thats one of the reasons why women are programmed to gain weight during pregnancy after the babys born, you need that extra weight. It all gets converted to milk to feed your baby. In fact, nursing full time burns about 500 calories a day the same as a good workout. At that rate, you could lose a pound a week without even trying. That having been said, there may come a time when you do have to put some effort into losing those last few pounds. After your baby is weaned, that natural means of weight loss isnt there anymore. Its time to start adding some workouts to your daily schedule. If you dont have the opportunity to exercise without the baby, take him along thats why jogging strollers were invented. Or boost your calorie burning by carrying your baby in a front or back carrier while you go for a walk or hike. The babies love it, and for you, its like carrying a constantly increasing weight around with your for hours at a time great for burning fat. After you have a baby, you may feel as though the baby has taken over your entire existence. It doesnt have to be that way. Take the time to reclaim your body and your time, and youll have more energy to take on the hectic schedule of a new mother. Employment Unauthorised Deduction of Pay
By Rosanna Cooper In the case of Atchoe v Camden Primary Care Trust [2006], the issue of unauthorised deduction of wages was heard before the Employment Tribunal. The employee worked in maintenance for the employers estates and facilities directorate. In addition, the employee was also occasionally employed out of hours when an emergency arose. This was an on-call system and was organised on a rota basis. If an employee took part he or she would receive additional payments for being on-call. If an employee was called out in an emergency he or she then received further payment for work carried out. The employees contract stipulated a number of things: * He had to show evidence that he held the technical qualifications required to work in the position of maintenance worker * He was expected to take part in the on-call system; and * The employer retained the right to vary the terms of his employment. The employer asked the employee to show evidence of his qualifications. It came into question whether the employee was able to provide this evidence. As a result of this, the employer removed the employee from the rota for the on-call system on the grounds of safety. The employee therefore no longer received the extra payment for being on-call. The employee relied on s13 of the Employment Rights Act 1996 and claimed that the employer had unlawfully deducted from his pay. The Employment Tribunal held that the employer had been entitled to remove the employee from the rota on the grounds of safety. However, it was not entitled to deduct from his pay. The Tribunal had based its decision on three authorities upon which the parties had not relied nor made submissions. The employer appealed to the Employment Appeals Tribunal (EAT). The employer submitted that the Tribunal had erred in its application of s13(3). Having found that the employer was entitled to remove the employee from the rota, the Tribunal should have found that the employer was entitled to deduct from the employees pay. As the employee was removed from the rota, he should not have continued to be paid. In addition, the employer argued that the Tribunal should not have relied on three authorities supporting its judgment upon which the parties had not had any opportunity to make submissions. The appeal was allowed for the following reasons: * The Tribunal should not have relied on any authority which the parties did not have an opportunity to make a submission. There had therefore been a material irregularity in the proceedings as neither the employer nor the employee had even mentioned the three authorities. * The Tribunal had erred in its application of s13(3). * The Tribunal should have concluded that there had been no unauthorised deduction of pay by the employer. If the employer was legally able to remove the employee from the rota, the employee was no longer entitled to the extra pay. The decision would therefore reversed. RT COOPERS, 2006. Florida Motorcycle Accident Lawyers
By Peter Emerson A personal injury is defined as bodily harm such as a broken bone, a cut or a bruise that is caused to an individual. Any kind of physical injury, including one resulting from a motorcycle accident can be classified as a personal injury. In such situations, the victims can file a court case to recover damages from the party responsible for the same. Head injuries are the root cause of death and serious injuries in motorcycle accidents. Most motorcycle casualties take place as a consequence of the recklessness or negligence of a person other than the victim, who caused the accident. Motorcycle accident claims are fairly complex to handle and requires fast and professional reaction from the plaintiff and the attorney handling the case. However, it is impossible for victims to respond fast enough and take care of all details if they have had severe health problems or disabilities as a result of the accident. The best that a victim can do in such situations is to employ a personal injury lawyer. It is advisable for them to employ a Florida lawyer who specializes in motorcycle accident cases. There are many motorcycle accident lawyers in Florida who are skilled and qualified professionals with years of experience behind them. It is essential for motorcycle accident lawyers to possess dexterity and the ability to assist their clients by offering complete legal support in claiming compensations and other legal issues. Their assistance is important to make successful compensation claims by managing the details of the case such as injury evaluation, accident reports and claim preparations. In order to obtain compensation for a victim's pain and suffering, Florida motorcycle accident lawyers are required to prove in court that the victim has been injured as the result of the neglect of another party. In addition, they must be in a position to show that as a result of the accident, the victim has incurred a loss in wages, medical expenses and suffering. Florida is gifted with some of the best personal injury lawyers and attorneys in the US. Reputed motorcycle accident lawyers in the State of Florida deal with accident cases on the basis of a contingent fee agreement. This implies that in claiming injury compensations and offering supplementary legal services, the lawyers do not charge any money unless they win the case. Cross Stitch
By Brent Shields What is this thing called cross stitch? Well...in a way, cross stitch is just like embroidery or needlepoint. But that one statement will often bring many handcrafters to the boiling point. Die hards from each type of craft think that their own craft is the best and they just don't like being compared to the others. So...to simplify things lets say that cross stitch is mainly stitching with planned x's like this xxx or angles like this ///// or this or lines like this ----- with loops and controlled knots. Now you just put the stitches together and you yourself can create some of the most beautiful gifts you have ever given to anyone. Let's Look at Some Basics Cross-Stitch has become such a popular type of handcraft that you often find the crafters no longer use a kit for their projects, they create their own. But, before you can go out on your own and start creating your own art, you will need to know more about the fabrics, thread, needles and frames. That's why most Crafters start out with a kit.
Also when you buy patterns or kits, sometimes you decide to use different fabrics and threads than what is mentioned in the projects. The following will help you to understand and adapt the patterns and materials for your own needs. Cross-Stitch Fabrics What is called counted cross-stitch can be stitched on just about anything that will allow you to make consistently even sized stitches. I have even seen people use an iron on pattern and an iron on grid to insure the even stitches they wanted. (Like on T-shirts) Aida Cloth Aida cloth is the most common of all the cross-stitch fabrics. Look close at the fabric and you will see that the woven threads are grouped and separated by little tiny spaces. This makes a pattern of squares so that even a beginner will be able to see exactly where their cross-stitches need to be placed. Aida cloth comes in 6,8,11,14,16 and 18 count threads but 14 count is the most often used thread count for the beginner. Aida cloth comes in a variety of colors and threads counts and for the beginner they even have (in the white cloth only) a removable grid of pre-basted threads. Now how about that for being helpful? Linen Over all, because of the price, linen is considered to be an excellent fabric to work with by the more experienced cross-stitchers. The threads that they use to weave the linen cause a slightly irregular thickness to work on. And when you buy linen you need to remember that most designs are stitched over two threads so, 28-count linen will work out a 14 stitches per square inch. Linen is made in counts of 14 to 40 count so at 14 you would have 7 stitches per square inch and at 40 you would have 20 stitches per square inch. Sweaters Sweaters are an excellent background for cross-stitch. Just by basting a grid onto the sweater you will be able to have the even consistent stitches you want. But don't try cross-stitching on knits without the grid because knit stitches are not square. They are wider than they are tall and your design will appear broader and shorten than the pattern you are working from. Burlap Burlap can be counted and stitched as easily as any other traditional cross-stitch fabric. And if you are working a country style pattern it will give you that little extra something we all look for in the work we do. Evenweave Fabric The recent popularity of cross-stitching has created a need for specialty fabrics. These fabrics are called evenweave fabrics because they are woven from threads of a consistent diameter. Most of the evenweave fabrics are counted by so many threads by the inch and are worked much like the linen fabrics. Needlepoint Canvas Quite often needlepoint canvas is used for cross-stitch, especially on clothing and things that are not suitable alone. In fact waste canvas is designed to unravel when dampened. And the count runs from 6 1/2 to 20 stitches per inch. Hardanger Fabric Now hardanger fabric is used for the extra fine cross-stitch. This is the traditional fabric used for the famous Norwegian embroidery of the same name. This weave produces 22 small squares per inch. Threads for Cross-Stitching Most threads used for embroidery can be used for cross-stitching, just separate the threads into ones, twos, threes, fours, etc, etc. The more threads you use the richer the work will look, the less threads the more fragile it will look. The rayon or silk floss will give your work a shine or slick look but sometimes they are more difficult to use as they tend to tangle. Pearl cotton is also a high sheen. Flower Thread and Other Specialty Threads Flower thread is 100% cotton with a matte finish and is used as a single thread (same as two ply). Over dyed threads are introduced on the market almost everyday. Most of them give that one of a kind appearance because of their irregularly variegated colors. All of the threads I have mentioned so far are available in this form also. They are great for when you want to change colors without having the need to change threads. Yarn and Ribbon When working with the large projects you can use yarn, ribbon and even strips of fabric to give your work your own personal touch. The larger the squares the larger ply thread you can use. Needles Generally blunt pointed needles are better for working on most cross-stitch fabrics because they slip through the holes and threads without snagging and splitting the fibers. There is one exception to this rule, when working with waste canvas you will need to use the sharp embroidery type needles. And a lot of companies sell the blunt needles labeled "Cross-stitch" but they are identical the the tapestry needles which have a much larger selection to choose from. The First Pattern Your first pattern should be something small and simple, so you would be better off starting out with a small kit. It's kind of like using training wheels on your first bike... it will give you a little security. Besides it comes with needles, floss, fabric and anything else you need to complete your first project. Good luck and happy stitching. Can Supplements Help With Anxiety Attacks?
By Shane Baxter Anxiety and panic disorders are one of the most common mental health problems among American adults. They can take a number of forms including agoraphobia, panic attacks, social anxiety disorder and generalized anxiety disorder. They can be a result of both environmental conditions and heredity. For many years, these disorders have been treated with various prescription drugs and several types of therapy. These forms of treatment do have some drawbacks, however. Medication can often cause unwanted side effects, therapy can take considerable time, and both can be quite expensive. As a result, alternative forms of treatment are becoming more and more common. Of course, before embarking on any kind of treatment program, your first step should be to consult with your doctor. Supplements may be helpful but your doctor will be able to give you a thorough diagnosis and offer the best treatment program for your particular case. Some symptoms of anxiety and panic can be signs of serious physical conditions that must be treated properly. Supplements are often ineffective in these situations. One of the more popular supplements that people use to calm their anxiety is Chamomile tea. It can either be brewed as a drink or taken in capsule form. Valerian root is a centuries-old treatment for sleep problems like insomnia. Its calming effects can also have a positive effect on anxiety and panic problems. Its effect have been compared to those of the prescription drug Prozac, but without the severe side effects. If the idea of prescription medications is uncomfortable for you, these alternative forms of treatment may be just what you need. Always discuss them with your doctor, however, to be sure that they are safe for you to take. Shane Baxter writes about panic and anxiety attacks for the Anxiety Action website. When It Comes To Some Of The Popular Myths About Hair, Don't Believe Everything You Hear
By Gregg Hall Many of us have heard a few hair myths, but which ones should we believe. Are the myths really just a myth, or are some of them true? There are some things that you can do to damage or cause hair loss, and there are some things that are not bad for your hair. Don't believe everything you hear about your hair though, there are some pretty crazy myths out there. Here are a few of the common myths we thought we would straighten out for you. First myth we want to correct would be the myth that cutting your hair will cause it to become thicker. This is not true. The thickness of your hair cannot be altered by cutting it either, even though it may appear too. If you think your hair looks thicker it may be because your hair is thicker at the base than it is at the tip. The only thing you can do try to thicken your hair would be a texturizing perm or dye, or volumizing shampoo. Cutting your will also not cause it to grow faster, neither will brushing it one hundred strokes a day. If you brush your hair this much you may actually cause more damage and breakage to your hair. Hair usually responds better when you use a comb anyway. Next are a couple of myths about shampoo and conditioner. With shampoo you only need about a quarter size to get your hair clean. If you have very long hair you may need a little more, but not too much. All that extra shampoo is not doing you any good. Next is how often you wash your hair. Washing your hair everyday will not harm it if you have the right shampoo for your type of hair. Washing your hair can actually make it healthier. Conditioner does not repair split ends. Yes that's right, it does not repair. Conditioner may make the hair look as though it is less damaged, but it does not repair the damage. A good conditioner may also help protect your hair from future damage. Here are a few myths about things that do not cause hair loss. Dying, perming, blow drying and sun exposure do not cause hair loss. It is true that dying and perming your hair may cause damage to your hair, especially if you over do it, but it will not cause hair loss. Blow drying can also damage your hair by burning it or drying which may cause it to fall out, but the hair will grow right back. In order for the sun to cause hair loss it would have to affect the follicle, which it doesn't. Here are a couple of things that may cause hair loss so pay attention. Stress, diet, and tight hairstyles are all linked to hair loss. If you are extremely stressed you may suffer from temporary hair loss. Once the stress has passed the scalp usually recovers and the hair returns to normal. Diet can also cause hair loss, so make sure you are eating healthy to keep your body healthy and functioning properly. Tight hairstyles that are worn for long periods of time can damage and break the hair and cause tension to the scalp. In some cases this hair loss has become permanent. This of course is from wearing your hair like this all the time, but be sure you are aware of the damage you can cause. A more relaxed hair style will benefit your scalp and your hair. Smokers are you ready for this? Smoking can cause your hair to turn gray or fall out faster. Studies have shown that smokers are four times more likely to get gray hair than women who don't smoke. Preformed Ponds Manufactured from New Rubber/Plastic Composite More Durable and Resistant to Wear
By Gerry Fung Traditionally, liner kits have presented many difficulties for the beginner pond gardener. Since every liner pond shape is different, pond gardeners must customize their own pond, ensure that it is level, and ensure that it does not have excessive wrinkling. A flexible preformed pond, on the other hand, is easy to install. The flexible preformed shell already has a pre-defined shape, yet it is easily transportable, since a typical folding kit comes in a box that can fit into your car truck (I.e. it is one-sixth the size of a regular preformed kit). Thus, installation involves merely removing the pond from the kit, unfolding it, digging a hole, and inserting the pond shell into the hole. One common complaint of customers in the past has been that flexible pond shells have been difficult to unfold. To address this problem, as of January 2006, Algreen Products has introduced a new line of flexible preformed pond kits which are manufactured from a novel blend of rubber, nylon, and plastic. Using the new rubber-based composite, Algreens ponds are now extremely easy to unfold. Because of the flexibility offered by the rubber component, which is supplemented by the stiffness offered by the plastic component, the ponds are also many times more resistant to breakage and wear. According to Melissa Mulligan, sales and marketing director at Algreen Products, This new innovation makes our flexible ponds easier to unfold, more durable, and more resistant to wear and breakage this composite will revolutionize the preformed pond business. Algreen is currently incorporating the proprietary composite material into their line of folding pond shells and streamlets. The new pond shells and streamlets are being introduced in a black colour, and are currently available from www.buypond.com. The composite has also been introduced in their 144 gallon granite pond kits. Each Algreen pond kit comes complete with:
A rubber/plastic composite pond shell and streamlet (sizes detailed above).
A SuperFlo submersible pump with a built-in pre-filter, telescopic riser, and a diverter.
Fountain heads that allow you to set up a fountain in the middle of your pond.
Tubing and clamps.
2 silk pond lilies.
A 20-year manufacturers warranty on the pond/streamlet, and a 2-year manufacturers warranty on the pump.
A free SuperGlo underwater light!

7 Tips on Positioning Your Indoor Pot Plants - From a South African Perspective
By Andrew Smit There are very few places is a home where pot plants will not grow. It must be remembered, however, that not every position will suit all plants. Indoor plants fall into three somewhat loose categories: those that have low, moderate or high light requirements. If you have identified a place in your home that you would like to liven up with plants, first assess how much ambient light there is. You can then do a little research into what plant type might best suit the desired space. Remember you can always supplement the available light with artificial light. This is especially useful in winter to keep plants healthy. Specialised grow lights are available from most large supermarkets or hardware stores. 1. Most indoor plants, even if they need bright light, do not tolerate direct sunlight, especially midday or afternoon light. 2. Flowering plants generally need more light than plants grown for their foliage. 3. Short-day plants like poinsettias and chrysanthemums have very specific light requirements if you want them to re-flower 4. The light intensity rapidly decreases the further away you move from the source i.e. a window. For example the light 2,5m from a window is about 5 percent of that on the window sill. 5. If you have a rather dark corner that needs brightening, do not be discouraged. There are many plants that do well without much light. 6. Do not suddenly move a plant from a dull to a bright position, but gradually accustom it to stronger light. 7. In summer net curtains help to diffuse the light. http://www.turtleherbestate.co.za where you will find Global solutions and ideas. Capital Budgeting
By Elizabeth Morgan Capital budgeting is a process of planning expenditures incurred on assets whose cash flow is expected to range beyond one year. In other words, it is defined as a process that requires planning for setting up budgets on projects expected to have long-term implications. It can be used for processes such as the purchase of new equipment or launching of a new product in the market. Businesses prefer to intricately study a project before taking it on, as it has a great impact on the companys financial performance. Some of the projects that use capital budgeting are investments in property, plants, and equipment, large advertising campaigns, and research and development projects. The success of a business depends on the capital budgeting decisions taken by the management. The management of a company should analyze various factors before taking on a large project. Firstly, management should always keep in mind that capital expenditures require large outlays of funds. Secondly, firms should find modes to ascertain the best way to raise and repay the funds. The management should also keep in mind that capital budgeting requires a long-term commitment. The requirement for relevant information and analysis of capital budgeting has paved the way for a series of models to assist firms in amassing the best of the allocated resources. One of the oldest methods used is the payback model; the process determines the length of time required for a business to recover its cash outlay. Another model, known as return on investment, evaluates the project based on standard historical cost accounting estimates. Popular methods of capital budgeting include net present value (NPV), discounted cash flow (DCF), internal rate of return (IRR), and payback period. While working with capital budgeting, a firm is involved in valuation of its business. By valuation, cash flow is identified and discounted at the present market value. In capital budgeting, valuation techniques are undertaken to analyze the impact of assets instead of financial assets. The importance of capital budgeting is not the mechanics used, such as NPV and IRR, but is the varying key involved in forecasting cash flow. The importance of capital budgeting is not only its mechanics, but also the parameters of forecasting the incurrence of cash in the business. Budgeting provides detailed information on Budgeting, Budgeting Software, Capital Budgeting, Personal Budgeting and more. Budgeting is affiliated with Home Grants. What Tools Do You Need For Beginning Patchwork?
By Pauline Rogers The tools you use can help you enjoy your hobby or cause you to abandon a project before completion. Many quilters spend hours of discouraging drudgery until they discover the tools of the trade, and the proper way to use them. It is possible to make a quilt with a dull pair of scissors and the measuring tape scrounged from the hubby's toolbox. Why would you want to make things so hard for yourself? If you are able to persevere, the resultant quilt will be much less than satisfactory. There is an endless variety of patchwork and quilting tools available. This can be daunting to the beginner. As you build your experience up you can add to your tool collection but there are certain "must have" tools necessary to get you started. The rotary cutter is the best invention ever for cutting all those pieces for patchwork. Rotary cutters come in many sizes. The medium sized rotary cutter is the most used, as it is great for single or multi layer. The jumbo rotary cutter is ideal for cutting through multiple layers. The mini cutter is superb for cutting around curves and trimming square triangles back to size. Self-healing cutting matsspecially designed for use with rotary cutters. The mats come in many different sizes. The recommended size for most quilting work is 18" x 24". The mat protects the rotary cutter from damage, prevents harm of the surface where you are cutting and helps keep the fabric from slipping about. Most mats have grid lines which aid in placing the fabric. A proper ruler is essential for ease and accuracy. Of the many rulers available, Creative Grid Rulers are outstanding. The white and black lines are easy to see on any colour fabric. The best advantage that these rulers have, are the built in grips that eliminate slipping of fabric. These two features make tasks much easier. Utility scissors are required for cutting paper for use in foundation paper piecing, cutting out patterns for appliqu and clipping threads. Good quality 8" fabric scissors, for use in cutting just fabric. Don't use these scissors for anything but fabric, as that "just this once" to cut a little bit of paper will soon result in needing a new pair. A sewing machine is necessary for easy piecing. The machine should help you effortlessly sew a " seam allowance. Iron and ironing board for pressing and setting seams. Pins may be small but they are essential.Clover Flower Head Pins work exceptionally well for foundation piecing and are ideal in preventing your fabric from moving when you are cutting. How to Prune Lilac Shrubs
By Yvonne Cunnington Today's lilac varieties offer larger flowers and more variety in color and scent, as well as flower and shrub form. Fragrance too is variable. French hybrids are sweetly scented, while oriental varieties and their hybrids have spicy overtones. Single flowering lilacs tend to be more strongly scented than doubles. For best results, plant lilacs in full sun in a well-drained location, away roots of mature trees and follow proper pruning practices. Avoid high nitrogen fertilizers (such as lawn fertilizer), which encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers. Once young shrubs are four to five years old, annual pruning is essential to ensure that you get flowers all over the shrub - not just at the top. Lilacs: when and how to prune Pruning encourages growth of healthy young stems, which produce better blooms than thick old ones. Because of their suckering tendencies, many lilacs will outgrow their space if you don't prune them. Prune lilacs immediately after flowering. Next spring's flowering buds are produced in June and July, so avoid removing them with late pruning. By cutting off spent flowers right after blooming, you ensure that the shrub's energy goes into producing flower buds for next year, not seeds. Each season, cut out a quarter of the oldest branches and take out any crossing stems. To rejuvenate old, overgrown lilacs, cut one-third of thickest, oldest stems to the ground and remove thin suckers each season. Over three to four years, all old stems will be replaced by new growth. Do this job in late winter or early spring before leaves emerge. (You won't lose too many flowers because overgrown plants don't bloom well anyway.) Young lilacs should start flowering two years after planting, but it can take about five years. Depending on weather conditions, lilacs can produce heavy blooms one year and few the next. Spring bloom is influenced by the previous season's weather. The best bloom tends to follow cool, sunny summers.
